Bomb suggestions
Bomb suggestions
Well, my buddy and his wife are moving back to this area from Nashville, TN. in about two months. I jumped at the chance to help out, but now I need some BOMB advice. I'll most likely be pulling an 8x10 enclosed cargo trailer pretty well loaded up with household stuff as well as a harley in the bed. I don't see the trailer breaking 5500 pounds and the harley is a sporty, so maybe 550 or so. I know this isn't monster weight, but I am intercooler challenged, so temps could easily be an issue. Would it be better to turn down the fuel, or just watch the right foot? Here's a list of mods I wanted to do sometime by the end of summer---lemmie know what I should look at doing before the trip:
1--BHAF
2--rips 4'' exhaust (got mandrel bent 3'' to 3.5'' mandrel bent tail pipe now)
3A--water/meth w/just water towing to cool things off
3b--intercooler, also to cool things off (duh
)
4--rear air bags...she's squattin about an inch in the back. I'm thinkin about compensating with the bags since I run empty 90 percent of the time.
5--my turbo is stock and tired...I'd like a piers hybrid, but $$$ may limit me to a less tired h1c for now---she's not scrapin yet, but I don't think I'll be safe making the journey with my present turbo. Maybe just a 16cm...
6--governor spring---in the tool box waiting for this week!
7--any added suggestions or comments on the above are greatly appreciated. I'd like to get the best towing bang for the buck to the tune of about $1000 over the next 60 days.
Thanks, as always.

Well, at $1000 you're pretty limited. A good used WH1C or HX-35, the governor spring, water/meth, and the air bags will pretty much kill the budget. You gotta run some meth in the system to keep algae from growing in the tank.
Well, I've got the spring (all 16 dollars worth
). I guess I'm wondering if I should struggle with the I/C retrofit (I've seen a few floating on e-bay) or rely on water/meth. Ideally, I'd like both, eventually, but which would be more cost effective to start out? Thanks for the reply, Dave.
BTW, I am NOT looking forward to towing with the Detroit---that thing is downright spooky running empty

Unless you get a smokin' deal on the parts the intercooler install will eat up around $800 - $1000. I believe water/meth is more effective, but it does have the drawback of being a constant small expense, basically like getting worse fuel economy. Water/meth is a much quicker install and the initial cost is lower.
The Detroit will calm down with more weight on it.

There are two main companies making the systems, mine is from Snow Performance.

I highly recommend the Snow setup because of the progressive controller. It makes the water/meth work so seamlessly, you can't really tell it's working until you turn it off.
I wouldn't bother with the Stage 1 kit, it's really more for low boost stuff like Powerstrokes and GM 6.5's. I had to raise the pump pressure a lot on the Stage II kit with both nozzles installed to be able to bog the motor, I'm sure a Stage 1 would have been maxed out and still not able to bog the motor. If you can't bog the motor, that means you could put more water/meth through and make more power and have a better cooling effect. They say at 50/50 the quantity injected only needs to be 25% of the fuel injected - I go through about a quart a minute at full boost and there's no way I'm burning a gallon of diesel a minute.
I can't recall the name of the other company off the top of my head,
but I know Cethane is using their system.
