Question To bomb or not to bomb ??

I was thinking about buying the outlook monitor with the downloader but I don’t want to risk losing my warranty. I’m happy with the truck being stock but I have a very short drive to work and sometimes I can’t reach good operating temperatures before I have to shut it off. So I thought maybe with a box I would generate hotter egt’s and work the truck a little bit more before I have to shut it off. So if I do buy the box do I need to do all the other mods. (air intake, exhaust, etc..)

For your situation, I would say that it is not worth it to bomb your truck. While it sure is fun, it isn't practical for what you are looking to get out of it.

If you want to get her warmed up, just drive to work in 4th gear at bout 2800 RPM the whole way. That'll get things nice and warm

Thanks BigBlue.

One more question, being new to the diesel scene. How high can I go on the RPM with out doing serious damage, 2800 seem a bit high to me when the red starts at 3000.

Also I’m kind of the gadget junky and I would like to get a monitor or some gauges just to see what’s going on even though my truck is stock. What do you think waste of money or I can get some good information out of them.

flyfish, I wouldn't worry about the RPM. The PCM programming will stop your truck from hurting itself. The engineers at Cummins know the limits of these engines and will program it so that you don't get close to the danger zones. I have no problem running my truck up to 3200 RPM anyday of the week. Just take this in. Cummins makes a version of the ISB that is for marine usage (i think it is called QSB). Motors on a boat take a very tough beating because they are typically run WOT all the time. Its the same basic engine as ours and it runs at RPM limiter all day long with no problems.

I don't think there is anything wrong at all with wanting to get guages without having perf addon's. It simply shows that you want to know what is going on inside of your engine. You may be surprised at what you find. And if you do decide to get an aftermarket box at some point, you have already completed the most important step.
