ATF brand?

My 3 speed trans calls for Mopar 7176 or Dexron II (at least that's what it says on the dipstick).

I just bought a bottle of Castrol ATF+3, because on the bottle it says: "formulated for use in chrysler transmissions, ............, where ATF+2 Type 7176 fluid is specified."

But then when I got home, I read the rest of the bottle: "Not recommended for automatic transmissions where Dexron II fluid is specified".

According to my dipstick these statements are contradictory? Should I use it or not?

What brand is good and easily available at parts stores?

I have the Castrol ATF+3 in my trans. I bought the truck used and don't know what was in it. I can tell you I was having problems with OD popping in and out and then not engaging at all.

I dropped the pan, new filter, added a drain pluig and filled it up with ATF+3 and OD worked perfect.

I have since put a couple of thousand miles of beating on the fluid and it's still working great.

The FSM says to use Dextron II ONLY if the ATF PLUS (ATF Type 7176) is not available

i use whatever dexron iii i can find, since there isnt much selection anymore or im looking in the wrong places. ive been looking around for info on the differences between the two and there isnt alot around. i think atf+3 is intended for the newer trannies. the dexron is about half the price of the atf+3 anyway, and i havent had any problems yet.

Use any of the Dextron fluids is ok and then add the modifier from Lubegard-have been using this combo for the last 2 years and no problems. I have also found out to keep the tranny temps down to add 2 qrts of any good straight 30wt engine oil. Just my .02s worth!

Can you do that? lol. I thought oil in the tranny was bad? Or was that tranny fluid in the oil? maybe either one.
