Angry Bleeding Getrag

My trans leaks pretty bad. There's about a 2" puddle under the truck each night... any ideas?

Also...I'm planning to flush the fluid & overfill. What oil should I use, how much does it take, and should I add any additives?

Thanks..

Hardcore,

When observing the puddle, does it seem to form at the rear of the trans(output shaft seal),or the front/inspection cover(input shaft seal)?
There's also some PTO covers(on mine) on the sides...maybe one(or both) of those?

Get some engine cleaner, and maybe a scraper(if it's heavily goo'ed) and clean'er up real good so you can trace where the bleeding is coming from...then you'll have a good idea what you need to replace.

The Getrag takes 5-30 motor oil...anything heavier is too thick to lube'er proper-like.
3.5 quarts is what it calls for...I guess that means 4.5 quarts to overfill it right and proper.

Hope that helps,
Vinny

Will do vinny...thanks for the info.

Would using synthetic oil help? Or just regular 5w-30 Motor oil? Should I add some Lucas Oil Stabilizer?

The Lucas will thicken it up, you don't want that. A lot of guys are using Mobil 1 5w-30, I like Redline MTL, a thin oil formulated for manual transmissions. Until you fix the leak just dump in any old 5W-30, no sense bleeding $5 a quart oil all over the place. Next time you fill it up, get an elbow and nipple to screw in where the fill plug goes. Leave the elbow pointing up, and you can overfill it from under the truck using a funnel. Then just put the plug in the elbow and you're all set.

Or, if you have an extra $3000 laying around, buy a NV4500 upgrade, and be done with the dribbling Getrag once and for all. Of course, when my bleeding Getrag finally started popping out of gear and not shifting into second, I didn't EXACTLY have an "extra" $3000 just "laying around", but I'm glad I switched trannies, that's for sure!

try some 5/30 for older cars. It will swell seals a bit. I used synth in a trany which did not leak and got one for my troubles. I then put some high miles oil in it and the leak dried up.
