Transfer case bleeding

I noticed a puddle of oil under my truck this weekend after pulling my camper about 100 miles. I looked under it and it looks like the rear tail section on the transfer case has given up. How hard is this to fix? It is bad enough that the oil has slung all up under the cab and is leaking off the case. I checked the level and it is still ok. Someone told me I should replace the "bushing" also. I called around and talked to the owner of the local transmission shop about a new bushing, but he said he would have to have the old one to match them up. It is a NP205.Any suggestions?

I guess the fellow who suggested it figured while I had the driveshaft off, I might as well replace the bushing.

Im sure the 205 has no bushings, at least non of the 4 or 5 I have had. Are you sure its a 205? Cast iron case, tagged by the PTO outlet with info. If so the rear seal is easy to replace. That would be your problem. The seal will come out from the outside no dissassembly needed. you will see the bearing inside it no bushing. I have had the tail yoke come loose and cause the seal to go bad, but you will see if that is the case when you remove it to replace the seal. BTY my gasser with the 208 aluminum TC has a inner bushing and seal and an outer wiper seal. That sounds like what there reffering to.
Good luck.

Thanks Apache, that sounds like right. The guy that recommended changing the bushing rebuilt his transfer case and said it was the same but it was out of an 86 Chevy gas 1/2 ton. I am sure it was a NP 208. I did not think of that before. I love this forum. I am off to tackle it now. Thanks for the help!

Thanks Apache, I pulled the old seal out and went to NAPA. Glad I went in with the old seal. It took four seals for the parts guy to finally get the right one. I couldn't get it through to him that it was the rear output shaft seal on the transfer case. He even asked if it was four wheel drive! LOL He kept trying to give me one for the transmission. Oh well, sometimes you get a good parts person. Got everything back together and you were right, there is no bushing, only a bearing which checked out ok by looking and feeling of it. Thanks for the help. I was a little nervous about trying it, but it was easy.
