BHAF/Smokey Mount
BHAF/Smokey Mount
So i fabbed up as Old Smokey Mount friday, took about 6 hours from leaveing the house to the race car shop to driving w/ the new filter.
I love it but there are some things i would like to let people know (newbies) when it come to fabbing one of these up.
1) Use sheet that is .100 - .125, unless you want to make braces like i did because i used black race car body sheet metal (looks better in my opinion.
2) Use a 5" hole saw, it took 30-40 min. making 4.5" a 5" hole.
3). Clamp the sheet down to a 2 x 8 and use 2 x 2 on top to straddle the hole, beacuse it grabs very easily and chatter to no end
4) Remove the rad. over flow as well as the A/C "can" from the fender. This helps with getting the mount in, reintsall them after you have the filter mounted. You should also remove the bolt and nut clip closest to the front of the truck that the A/C "can" bolts to ( You can use a bolt and nut later that passes through the bracket, fender, AS well as the filter mount.
5) I had to remove some material from the chamfered corner because it still rubbed the inner fender.
6) I had to space the A/C "can" off of the original mount 1.5" beacuse it hit the mount and i didn't like it rubbing.
7) Wrap the end of the filter about 10 time with electrical tape because the factory hose is a bit too big.
I forgot to add, that i didn't remove the black metal bracket that the stock box bolt onto, beacuse i didn't feel like filling the four holes is leaves.
I don't know how to post pictures on a tread so just check my gallery

Another tip:
When I made mine, I used one of these (race car buddy had them laying around) to hold it in at the front. Much easier than reaching around and getting a nut on a bolt. I used aluminum so I could not weld the nut in place.
