Automatic Tranny Question

to start...sorry for the long post....my brother has a 92 reg cab d250 with the auto tranny w/overdrive. the overdrive is not working and he bought the truck from our stepdad. stepdad said that a plug is loose and has to be zip tied together in order for it to work and the replacement part is around $300. i was wondering if anyone knew what the heck he is talking about and if there is a way to correct the problem without having to buy an entire new harness for that price. any help would be greatly appreciated.
