Automatic Tranny to Manual?????
Automatic Tranny to Manual?????
Is it possible to switch my automatic tranny to a manual tranny? I know it is a big job and costs lots, but I miss Stick shift and love my truck( Won't trade for a manual ). Any comments? Price of job??? side effects after done?
Re:Automatic Tranny to Manual?????
Hello,
I have the same problem you do I can't trade mine either. However I have done the swapp on two chevys and one ford diesel. Next week I should have all of the parts for my swapp. I got a good deal on a transmission and bell housing and a flywheel. Then I came across a wreck that was just like my truck and managed to pick it clean of everything I needed for a low cost all total with a brand new clutch and good parts I have probably invested around 1300.00 in parts. Last year it cost me 1400.00 to have th basic tranny rebuild done to it. A dtt or an ats tranny is around 3500.00 i believe. I would like to have one but I love my stick. If you know how to deal with salvage businesses and know where to look and have the mechanical know how you can do it for a reasonable price. This topic has been posted several times in the past on this site. The cost that I heard to do one was some where around 3,000 total. I assume that is with labor. I plan on starting next week or the week after should have it done in 3-5 days. As for the computer it is prudent to swapp for a manual set up, however it is not necesary, You will get tired of looking at the check engine light because the computer will log a transmission fualt code when it does not recieve data from the sensors on the engine that regulate throttle position rpm and fluid temperature. However the 12 vavle cummins is purely mechanical and the last of its kind in highway vehichles. All other diesels like the PSD ford the 24 valve and the chevy 6.5 after 94 and the Dmax require the PCM to control them and are all driven by wire. This is just my 2 cents worth hope it helps to answer your question.

Ty

Well, sounds like you know your stuff!!!!

I am not even close to being a mechanic, so I will talk with a buddy of mine. It's a big step and I still need to think about it.

I can change the oil and air filter though : )
Re:Automatic Tranny to Manual?????
Yea it is a big job it does require alot of effort, however it can be done. The main thing is to find a truck very similiar to yours preferbly identical if at all possible to get the parts that you will need. The reason for this is that these trucks can vary here in there through the years, which can make a job like this a real pain in the @#$# to get done which means part interchangeability is a must if you want it to work properly.

Ty
Re:Automatic Tranny to Manual?????
my two cents, three years ago I swapped my auto for a five speed. I have to say it was way easier than I would have ever thought. The only modification I had to make to the truck was cutting the hole in the floor board. Everything else just bolted right up. Probaly the toughest part was getting rid of the autos gear indicater and making the intrument cluster look stock without buying a new cluster. A simple piece of black plastic placed under the gauge suround to cover the hole, left buy the indicater, did the trick and doesn't look bad or stand out. I left the auto computer in and everything still works just fine, cruise, speedometer. I just removed the trans temp light, so wouldn't have to see it glowing all the time. No check engine light even after three years and over one hundred thousand since swap. One other thing, instead of buying a tranny out of a junk yard, like I did, consider spending a little more money for on rebuilt by someone who really knows what they are doing and make sure they update it with the revised fifth gear nut and even a fully splined mainshaft. Believe me you will want these updates, because sooner or later the fifth gear nut will back off. If you buy on out of a junk yard in might happen next week or many miles down the road, its your choice. Thats my two cents and a little more. PM me if you have any questions.

Hello
Thanks any advice from experience is very apprecitated. my tranny is being rebuilt right mow and I snould be able to have it done by the end of week after next. my tranny came with an upgraded fifth but it needed new bearings I thought why not just get it right and not have to worry about it again. If i run into a snag I might pm you but i think it will be pretty straight foward. Thanks again
