Another Strange Noise
I recently drove from Colorado to Florida and about the time I hit Alabama I noticed a strange noise I believe to be coming from the tranny/t case area. It makes a vibrating/grinding noise when it is in gear with no throttle in all gears and in reverse. Hubs are free and t case is in 2wd. With the rear end in the air it runs smooth. I had a transmission shop drive it and he told me that they would have to tear into the tranny to find out. So I proceeded to figure it out myself. First I pulled off the rear diff cover and everything looked good in there and oil was clean and full, so I put Royal Purple 75W140 in it. Next drained the T case and it had a fair amount metal flakes but the oil level was good. I put Royal Purple 10W30 in it. Next drained the rebuilt Genrag and it was overfilled and clean. I put 4qts Royal Purple 5W30 in that. I have to find some stainless steel pipe the other qrt in. Now I checked the u joints and they seemed tight and the rear wheels didn’t seem loose. Has anyone experienced a similar strange noise? Needless to say it bothers me when my old beauty cries for help.
