Well I got the new DieselPower mag yesterday and it had an article on Rust Bucket and how they did the new fuel sytem setup. They used an airdog II pump and filter system and set it to 16 psi and mounted it to the frame under the cab/bed. They cut a hole in the bottom of the fuel tank and put in a Hellman Sump to draw the fuel out of the fuel tank and got rid of the stock fuel sender. Supposedly the sump setup is better than a draw straw setup becuase the draw straw can suck air when it gets below 1/4 tank. They then ran a fuel line from the sump to the Airdog and then to the pump.

So how would this setup do vs. a 2nd gen lift pump with a regulator and using a stock fuel filter unit? If you did go with the Airdog setup, do you just take the stock lift pump and fuel filter unit out? and do they make a block off plate? The only negative i could think of with the airdog mounted on the frame would be more open to the elements and more likely to gell/ice up in the winter closer to the cold ground instead of next to the warm motor.

 

well the obvious improvement i know of is the air/water separation the airdog and the similar fass pumps do.

 

With the sump you leave the old setup in the tank, because you need the fuel sender and MUST have the return line. I am in the process of redoing my entire fuel system and will have some pics of what I'm refering to shortly. I got rid of the stock fuel supply line and capped it off on the tank, then opened up the pickup with a drill and ran new larger supply lines out the top. Then it runs thru a Carter 100gph pump set at 18psi.

I wouldnt mind doing a sump though, they are def great for supplying large amounts of fuel.

 

I installed the AirDog II about 2 months ago. It came with an upgrade for the fuel module in the tank. Its just puts a 1/2" flexible hose and a short steel pipe inside the module, its nothing special and will suck air. Its a good idea but there flexible tube is poor material. I'm just going to put a piece of 1/2 fuel line in place of it now. I removed the stock supply lines and lift pump. A chevy big block block off plate will fit over the hole. My airdog returns into the old supply fitting at the tank so i didn't have to cap it.

Out of my trouble with this airdog it seems to be a good unit besides getting the wrong parts and worrible tech support.

I am running the AD2 and the Hellman sump and I love it. I originally used the draw straw that came with the AD but I couldn't get it to quit sucking air so I got the sump and installed it. Haven't had a problem yet. Plus it looks sweet hanging there. also the AD helps with the bleeding of injection lines. I just turn the key to the on position and crack the lines. works real good.

 

Yeah i'm sure the sump and airdog would look pretty cool under there. I'm really thinkin about goin that route. I'm sure my pump is lacking fuel, I need a fuel press gauge pronto! I may have my brother build me a sump in the machine shop he works in... I don't feel like payin $165 for a piece of round aluminum with a flange and a hole in it.

How much HP do you want to get out of the truck? If you don't wan't more than 400 hp than i would not waste your money or anything that cost more than the low pressure piston LP. I don't pull mine down below 11 PSI at WOT.

 

Ramrod have you had any issues with the sump sealing up? What type of seal does it come with? I have an airdog 150 and have to keep it above 1/4 tank or it sucks air. I have been considering a Hellman sump but am nervous about cutting a hole in the tank for it and having it leak.

Soot, I have a Hellman sump on mine. It comes with a rubber gasket, and I put Ultra Grey RTV on both sides of the gasket and under each nylon washer for the mounting hardware. I was also leary of cutting a 3" hole in the tank but it sealed perfectly.
