Adjusting the overhead

I would like to adjust the overhead on my truck, but I'm not to sure on how it is done. Or even what tools are needed to get the job done. But I am pretty good with tools, as I have worked on my own equipment at my jobsites. Also, what gaskets or special tools will I need?
Thanks for any help or advice,
Wheelo

Will it get rid of some of my white smoke at an idle after it has warmed up?

mines got 175,000 miles and I contacted the previous owner and he said that he never adjusted them.
It does not seem that hard to do, is it harder than it seems to be?

Thanks,
Wheelo

If you have never adj valve before i would sugest that you have some one ho has, help you.....You don't want to BEND A VALVE!

If you have done some valve adj before just pick a methed and go slow and dubble check your work as you go and check it again before you fire it back up!!

Thanks, I have some experience with gassers, and my dad was a certified Cummins mechanic in the early 80's. He says he knows how it is done. Thanks a lot flashgordon!!

glad to help! don't now about the white smoke......generaly the white smoke indicate low comp but if it's after is warm, i don't think it could be......
white smoke is...unbured fuel, black is incomplete burned fuel, and blue is oil from the guides or rings....Just thinking out loud!

It kind of puffs white smoke after it has completely warmed up. Is it possible the timing slipped some?
Or should it get my injectors tested?
Thanks for thinking out loud!

The biggest problem with letting the valves go is that the gap will close up as the valve receeds into the head. Eventually the gap will be gone and the valve won't completely close. Then the valve, especially the exhaust, will get burned.

If the valves are way out you will loose effective compression due to bleed off. You might find that running the valves cures all the problems.

I would run them three times, start it with the valve covers off, let it idle for a minute, turn it off and re-check them. If you fine one or more still out recheck them twice!!!!
