AC Compressor Took a Crap

The ac in my 90 worked great until a few days ago, I got to looking at it and the belt was slipping on the ac pulley so I took the pump off. The clutch is totally fried in it but I can spin the pump over by hand and it seems to be working. So today I went down to the local parts store to get a new clutch or a new compressor all together. No luck! I went to 4 different stores and the only one that could get the clutch wanted 354 bucks for just the clutch assembly. They priced me a new compressor all together for 345 which didn't really seem to make sense to me because the whole assembly is cheaper then the clutch its self. The guy said it was made by four seasons and everyone I have talked to said to stay away from it because they are known for problems. So I called around to a few salvage yards to try and find a used one with no luck either. So I'm screwed for the moment. I'm sure there is a place out there that sells reman compressors for a whole lot less but I must just not be looking in the right place. I hope you guys can chime in and help because I'm sure I'm not the first person that has had the compressor go out. Any help or advice would be great because I want to get the truck back on the road ASAP.

Thanks All

Sounds good. Has anyone had luck with the four seasons compressors, everyone I talked to around town didn't like them because of getting them to cover the warranty but if you guys have had good luck with the compressors then there shouldn't be a need for a warranty.

I was getting quotes from Orielly's and Advance auto when I thought my A/C compressor was bad. I think the whole unit was 350. I know that's about the same price you mentioned, but it's the best price I was able to find.

First post... hopefully this will help.

I believe the Sanden SD715 is the new replacement for the 709.

At one time I had located these for around $240 new. I'll be doing some searching as my 709 is locked.

Great forum! I'll have lots of questions regarding my '92 D350.

Great information. Thanks. (my clutch is fine, but my pump just locked up too)

A friend of mine who's shop does a lot of A/C work has had lousy luck with rebuilt compressors from various sources and recommended me to search for a used one. Maybe the SD715 will turn out to be a better piece.

Make sure you 1991 owners remind JW that there were two models made in 1991 I/C & non I/C.

You might want to look at www.discountacparts.com their prices look really good. I haven't ordered anything from them but I know that my a/c isn't exactly healthy so I'm researching now.

Thanks guys, sounds like I'm not the only person that is having ac problems. I ran across a pretty good site (directauto.com) and found a reman clutch for just over 100 bucks. I didn't think this was to bad so I ordered it today. We'll see when I get it in a few days but I'll keep you guys posted.

Finally had time to get back on here and keep things up to date. The reman ac clutch I found on line didn't pan out, the company could not find a clutch that was in good enough condition to rebuild. So I figured I'd go down to the dodge dealer and see what they could find, well come to find out, they cannot get the clutch anymore and they don't sell compressors with a clutch. So I went back around to the auto parts stores to see if they could be of anymore help and most of the places acted like I was the only person in the world that owned a 1st gen cummins. At first I was trying to find a cheap fix but I want to be able to drive the truck again because its been down for almost 3 weeks. So to make a long story short about 600 bucks later I found the parts at car quest so I ordered them today and they should be here in the morning. It was quite a bit more then I was wanting to spend but I went ahead and got all the other goodies that go along with the ac system so hopefully no more problems. So after a few hours labor and a trip to harbor freight to get a set of gauges and an evac pump the truck should be back on the road. I'll let you guys know how well it works when I'm done and I think I'm going to need it cause its going to be in the high 90's all week.

When my compressor clutch bearing fell apart, I replaced the belt with a shorter non-AC belt until I find a deal on the compressor.
