About to buy an 89 f350 with 92 cummins swap, what to look for? Things I should do?
About to buy an 89 f350 with 92 cummins swap, what to look for? Things I should do?
So I'm a Ford fan (looks only) and love Cummins (I start work for cummins in columbus in August). This will be my first diesel vehicle I've owned. I did some research and found out about the KDP, which the seller has done. I'm pretty technical, have a few ASE's and know a good bit about gas cars but not a lot on diesel.
Can you folks give me some pointers??? Here's the description of the truck, I know what some of it means but not all of it. Any help appreciated.
"1989 Ford F350 crewcab with a VE pumped cummins diesel from a 1992 dodge. The engine has larger 5x12 injectors, turbo has a larger compressor wheel upgrade, powerstroke intercooler. Piston low pressure lift pump. The pump is tuned so it makes good power but doesn't smoke too bad. So the pump isn't turned up too much, makes about 30 lbs manifold pressure.
Autometer gauges, pyrometer, transmission temp, water temp, boost fuel pressure.
The transmission is the dodge A518 dodge automatic mated with adapters to a ford NP205 T-case. Transgo shift kit, under bed mounted transmission cooler with its own fan.
Everything works, A/C, cruise everything.
It has detroit lockers front and rear. Shackle reversal with newer ford superduty front springs so it rides pretty well. Hydroboost brake booster, brakes are new front and rear, SS braided brake lines."

Sound's like a Good truck . 1 question to ask is How is it reg ? is it still listed as Gas or Has it been changed to Diesel that may pose a Problem when you go too reg it into your Name . as long as the Price isn't out of Sight and thing's are ok when you look it over Go for it .and Welcome to DTR
Wow, what a steal, it wasn't a powerstroke, but an IDI though. Doesn't mean anything really.
Best of all worlds, just a slight ding for the 518 rather than a 47RH..... I would buy it in a flash.

Thanks guys. Picked it up and it drives great. Couple more questions though. When changing the fuel filter do I need to discharge fuel pressure?? Or is all the pump stuff after that? Also what oil should I use and how often do I change it? Dumb questions but again I'm pretty diesel dumb.

You don't have to worry about pressure on filter side just spin it off and change it . I normally change oil 15-40 rotella every 5 to 7,000 miles and as for fuel filter I change it every other oil change or 15,000 miles
