A518 TC lockup switch?
92 trans problem
The TC seems like it wont unlock on my 92. I tried to drive it around the yard for the first time today and the second you shift into Reverse or Drive the TC seems locked up and it pretty much stalls the truck. I just got the truck back from the frame shop and finally got a new radiator and belt in it in order to at least let it warm up. It seemed to drive around the yard fine before. There is a small toggle switch on the dash that i played with yesterday. Could that be a lockup switch and i just have it on lockup?
Could there be a TC lockup switch on it that i havent found?? I don't even know if the 518 can have one. Any help would be great!
PS. i bought this truck wrecked and don't know what mods it has other than a banks wastgated housing, banks intercooler, and exhaust.

The 518's are a non lock up trans. the switch might be for the od, the trucks with od usually have a push button on the lower part of the dash on the right hand side under the column. I don't have a od trans so I don't know exactly how they are suppose to work but I would imagine that you might have a problem with either the TPS or the PCM but I can't be positive. You might also want to check the linkages on the trans to make sure that they are not bent and operate smoothly.
Well the switch turned out to be for a pacbrake that was taken off the truck. I started it up again and the TC is definately locked. Neutral to drive and the truck lurches forward and stalls. Same thing in reverse. The tps could possibly cause this?
It's just weird that it shifted fine before and the tc was unlocked. Now all the sudden it's locked up for good.

Smokey96,
Unless someone put a newer trans in it should not have a lockup converter.
Theres a possibility that something inside the converter is wrong and catching the turbine driving it with the engine.
There's a couple of ways to tell, crawl underneath and see how thick the engine bell housing adapter is. Non-lockup ones are just over an inch thick, the lockup ones are deeper, right around 2" thick.

Sorry free89 i was in a rush and didn't think about what your posted. I understand that it's a non-lockup trans now.
I just got back from the track and started the truck up to show my buddy what it was doin and it worked fine! The motor and trans were both cold and it went smoothly right into reverse and drive. Seems to be that it's only when i let the truck warm up it does it. Could it be something to do with the trans cooler?

do you have a first gen? your sig says you have a second gen?? , you could try unhooking the tps and see if the TQ un locks, if you have a first gen, then it might be your valve body or the linkage is tweeked, did you get in a wreck?

I guess i should add my 92 into my sig huh?
I tried unhooking the TPS and it still did it. Yes the truck was wrecked when i bought it.
But it only seems to have this problem when the trans got up to normal temp. It doesn't do it when it's cold.

What exactly do you mean by "stall?" Dropping 100-130 RPM or so from unloaded idle is about normal (at least for the 2 autos I have). Any more than that, and I'd say you have a tranny issue somewhere.
If you dont have a tach, 100rpm is definitely noticeable. Might even bring the oil pressure light on if your idle is a little low to start with.
The reason it didnt do it when you tried to show your buddy could be due to normal torque convertor drain back- there was no fluid in the convertor yet, so the engine didnt get loaded up like "normal."
