93 4wd/5 speed 2500 mods

I recently sold my 92 4wd auto and bought a 93 4wd, 5 speed.
It has had the pump turned up slightly, the muffler taken off, and a large air filter installed.
Other than that is stock.
I have a pyrometer to install.

What would be the ideal build up for this truck?
I tow small loads (5-6k) several times a month, and several times a year I pull a 7000# trailer with a 3000# slide in camper (with water tank and gear).

I would like a logical list of things to do to this truck, with a focus on reliability and with fuel mileage being a consideration over more power. It has plenty of power as is.

I have been told to overfill the getrag transmission by 1 quart to help it lubricate.
I would like to install an exhaust brake at some point, but have read that I need to change the valve springs.
An exhaust is on the list also.

Also, if/when the getrag goes, what is the most common replacement?

What I am asking is what you guys would do to a truck like this?
Sell it?

The normal sequence seems to be larger exhaust, more air in, pyrometer, pump mods, etc.
Mainly, I want the standard recipe for a mild smoker and daily driver while still maintaining the 17.5/18 MPG.

At what point does the tranny become critical, and when it goes what should I be looking to replace it with?

To answer your question of what to do with a truck like yours (given your intended use), this would be my shopping list:

1)piston-style lift pump.---reliability/ability to support more fuel in the future
2)high flow banjos.---ability to support more fuel
3)hybrid turbo of your choice. HTT stageIII, PDR HX-35/16 etc.---ability to support and burn more fuel.
4)4'' exhaust---ability to get rid of more burnt fuel and get that big rig feeling
5)BOSCH 190 injectors---MORE FUEL! Good towing injector, from what I've read.
---trying to push a bunch a fuel through a stock '93 injector can be hard on the pump, according to the local BOSCH guy. Think of blowing through a straw that gets smaller and smaller. You're the pump and you have to work awful hard to get a good amount of air out the end of that straw. By making the straw end bigger, more air comes out for a given amount of work you put in. Said differently, the pump won't work as hard to maintain ''X'' flow with a bigger injector.

As for the Getrag, that's a tough one. There are a couple out there holding big power, but in short bursts. If you like to use all your power while towing, I would strongly recommend looking into a NV4500 or NV 5600 swap. I pull about 6k once a month with my Getrag and have had no problems. I built the tranny with cheapo bearings about 20,000 miles ago. So far, so good, but I neved load the tranny hard in first or second (weather I'm towing or not) and I don't use more than 1/3 throttle if I'm pulling over 10k. They look pretty tough (pics in gallery), but this is my only ride and I can't afford to have it down, so I drive like a wuss....

Well said G1625S. I would add, go through all the fluids, rearend- additive if LSD and 85-140 since you plan on towing, t-case 80-90wt, getrag 5w30 synthetic 4 1/2 to 5 qts which is 1 to 1.5 qts over, engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter, check/clean air filter, flush/drain antifreeze, and grease everything. Thats all the basic stuff.

Then as G1625S said, a good hybrid turbo, I suggest a pdr hx35-16, piston lift pump- heck of a good idea, new injectors such as the 190's, outta make a hell of a good towing machine.

Jeez, I can't believe you guys forgot the 3200 RPM spring! Gotta put that in, especially towing with a Getrag.

The banjo bolts are what attaches the fuel lines to the filter head. High flow banjo bolts have bigger holes in them. You can get them from Geno's garage.

i would assume with a heavy fueled truck they would let the fuel flow better. so do they make a noticeble power increase or do they just make life easier on the pump?

You only have/need two banjo bolts. Buy one tapped for 1/8" npt, and one non-tapped. They are the same banjo bolts as advertised for the 24V's.

As well as slightly overfilling your Getrag, service it every 15000 miles. It helps a lot.
