92 Pump Gear won't come off VE

Need to remove the injection pump gear and it does not want to come off. The three pump mounting bolts are removed. I have the gear nut loose and removed the lockwasher from under it. Using a puller and some bolts(quality unknown but look cheap..head marked USA) to attach to the gear resulted in the bolts bending. So I removed two bolts from the intake horn and tried those. These bolts did not bend but something is going to break if I keep torquing on it. It appears the pump gear has moved maybe 1/16 of inch or less.

Any ideas?

Background (build date 7-20-92) 1992 W250 5.9/auto with 151k. It appears the killer dowel came loose and resulted in an oil leak that was never fixed...eventually the original owner ran it low on oil and the rod starting knocking. Parked for 5+ years and the pump appears stock and probably never been off before.

Thanks.

Keep cranking on it. It probably sheared or smashed the woodruff key when the gear moved and that is causing you to have to put more torque on the puller. I would recommend getting some grade 8 bolts. Maybe hit the shaft with some penetrating oil like PB blast or similar. Sounds like you should probably remove the front cover to inspect TC bolts anyway and that will give you a better look at what your dealing with. Good luck

Are you sure the pump won't come out?

Ill throw this out there. A few weeks ago we pulled the pump out of my cousins truck, intercooled 92 W250 and when using the puller it didn't seem like it was doing much. Kept cranking down on the bolts. We stopped because it seemed like it wasn't even working. Unscrewed the puller and went to try to pull the pump off and it just came off, even though it felt like the puller wasn't doing anything.

I will give that a try. I forgot to mention the truck started on first crank after sitting five years. I expected it to at least need the fuel system bled. Pulling the front cover is a good idea..I was hoping to use the pump on another truck that has a leaking pump so hopefully the shaft is okay. Thanks.

I tried pulling the pump off and it did not seem like it was coming off. I suppose I could give it another try...I was just worried about messing up the pump shaft. I could see the woodruff key and the pump gear has not moved much.

First off make sure your bolts are aligned and everything is centered and square. As you apply pressure with the center puller bolt tap on it and around the gear with a small ball peen hammer.

Put the three nuts back on the back side, take that but off the shaft and pull it. You may be pulling the gear against the nut.

Tapping the center bolt on the puller a few times did the trick. Thanks a ton.

Ok, you can fess up, when she let loose you freaked just a wee bit at the noise and checked to see what broke, right?

I still jump out of my socks every time I pull one.....
