5.9 Conversion?
5.9 Conversion?
I have a 85 F250 with a 6.9 diesel. I am considering putting on a turbo for extra hp, but my dream has always been to have a 5.9 I know what i can get out of a 6.9 but I am wondering what kind of hp & torque I can achieve with a 5.9 with most of the mods listed in the performance tech articles. I have located a complete 1992 5.9 that was rolled over, the front end and engine compartment isn't damaged much, the radiator even appears to be good They are asking $2000 what do you think? Thanks in advance
I'd say with the cheap/free mods listed, you could probably get maybe 230-250 out of it. I'm sure more experienced members will chime in more.
$2000 is a decent price if all the running gear is in good shape. Seems like a good running first gen engine will usually go for $1500 to $2500. You could part out the rest of the truck and make most your money back.

GO FOR IT.
A bone stock 5.9 Cummins will run circles around the hottest 6.9 or 7.3 around. For all the particulars of making a conversion as painless as possible look at this site:

Hope that helps.
I had an 86 F-250 w/a 6.9........ I was always told the 6.9 is a horrible canidate for a turbo....??? So I sold it and bought a 96 Power Stroke. Then after spending $3,500. (computer, solid flywheel, transfer case, injector wiring harness's and on and on...) making it into a very sound truck, I found my 93 W250..... It is bone stock except for the exhaust brake and the pump that was slightly turned up when it was rebuilt....... I just refilled the tank after towing my 28' trailer up for Elk hunting. I put 23.3 gal and had driven 425.8 miles.....yep, that's 18.2 miles per gallon Youza...!!! The best my 96 ever got towing that trailer was 14.7, 19.5 empty (both are 5 speed sticks too) and my old 6.9.... empty was 15.3 and 9 towing the trailer. The old 6.9 towed the trailer ok but I had to leave right after deer season to make it in time for Elk season (it's real slow)......
Moral of this story..... I've had all three engines and the 5.9 is by far the best power, and economy. I'm a beliver!
OH almost forgot, what sold me was my neighbor. He has a 91 W250 and a 94 dually. He hauled 5th wheel trailers from the midwest to the West coast for years. The 91 has 492,000 and the 94 has 320,000 He's replaced both tran's and pumps, and that's it.....
