4x4 Conversion for a d250 2wd

I have a D 250 which has been in the family since 91 and i adore it, Its a great truck, it has power, looks and versatility.... Until you get into moisture, a field or mud, its completely helpless... I was wanting to know i could convert it from 2wd to 4wd. Is it a pain in the you know what. I refuse to let go of this truck and want i want it to stay in the family for as long as it's got wheels.

Winters like this are killing me!

I was parked for 5 minutes and i almost had to pull myself back to the house with the tractor.

Its not hard to find a Dana 60 front axle, there all over. Then find you a 205 transfer case, front drive shaft, have the rear shaft shortened, remove all the coil front suspention, weld on some leaf spring mounts, and tie in your steering how ever required.

Sure sounds easy when you say it like that huh? lol If you have a good welder and plenty of metal and all the parts then the whole ordeal should take 3-4 days of hard work.

IMO though, buy a cheap 4x4 winter beater to take the salt abuse and save the nice truck for the rest of the year. When I was in Maine I bought a w350 4x4 cummins plow truck for $500, spent $20 fixing it and drove it over a year. Then I put it in UncleHenry's and sold it for $2500 in 30 minutes. lol

Its not hard if you have some fab skills. The parts aren't hard to find either...just pricey. The easiest way to do it would be to find a donor vehicle to get everything off of. (parts and measurements)

try a power-lock first one wheel to two will make a world of differnce that is basicly what a conversion is any way one in front one in back, try two in back first it's a lot cheaper and a lot easier???

i have done it a couple of times on these model trucks and it takes a lot of time money and skill
p.s. you basicly need a front frame section because the front 3 yes three crossmembers are diffrent than 2wd trucks then the front and rear spring hangers as well as the steering box bracket and draglink and so on and so on

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I think i might just go for a posi rear end... that way i wont get stuck in dry grass any more during hay season.

Better get ready to put 1,500lbs in the bed, posi is worthless when all the weight is over the front. Still better to have a wheel pulling from the front where the weight is.

2k lbs in the bed is still cheaper than a 4x4 conversion
