47rh lockup help
A few mouths back i put a 47 rh in my truck. I rebuilt it with a steel front plant, put 5 clutches in the front drum, A&A wide front band, trans go shift kit, Raybestos high energy clutches, a BD converter, and a few other little things. The tranny works real nice full throttle up shift are at about 2600/2700 rpm and nice and crisp and part throttle up shifts are 1300/1400 and nice and smooth. I am having trouble with the lockup it only works in OD is that the way its meant to work. I would like the lockup to work in 3 to. Ken

Well, how do you have the lock up controlled now?? Are you using governor pressure? If you are you could install a 3 pole toggle switch for messing around. up could be manual, center off and down auto. I lock mine up in 3rd and let it grab o.d locked!! It pulls hard!!
Modifications must be done to the valve body to allow it to lock up in any gear but overdrive. I don't know what needs to be done but my goerend VB will lock up in 1st and shift though the gears locked.

The 47s should be able to lock up in 3rd, modifications are necessary if you want it to lock up in first or second, the 48s will lockup in any gear. It's a function of where the switch valve pulled the pressure from, on 47 and back it came off the high side of the 2-3 shift valve. therefor no lockup in 1st or 2nd.

Third gear lock up would be nice, but is there a way to automatically control it? Say have it lock in once you hit third and it stays locked into OD. And still have OD controlled by the TPS.
My wife will be driving this truck so it has to be blond proof.

If I let the pressure switch control lockup when it hits at 45mph in 3rd then shifts into OD at 48mph - while locked.
When slowing down the OD cuts off but doesn't shift out until the L/U releases.
If I control it manually I can hit the lockup while stopped and it won't lock until I hit 2nd then it stays locked thru OD.
If I hit L/U AND shift into 1st or 2nd the L/U NEVER comes in until I shift into D.
I want to get a Goerend modified VB - like Archer39 - so I can lock it in any gear..That way I won't have to floor the throttle to keep the tranny from shifting too soon when I'm pulling a trailer. I like to let the engine rev up into it's power band before shifting when towing.
OH - the switch I use is from a ferd ac - taurus i think - it is on at 45 and off at 37.

Nope---
It's hooked into the top port on the passenger side of the trans.
Not sure what it's called but it provides approx. 1 psi/1 mph.
It's 1/8"NPT and it's tight in close so I used a 1 1/2" nipple to move the Tees out where you can reach them.
One tee is on the 1 1/2" nipple then a 1/2" close nipple to a 2nd tee. The lockup switch is screwed into the 1st tee and the OD switch is in the 2nd one. The end has a plug in it for now. I'm working on a way to have a switch or relay or something momentarily open the circuit to the lockup when the OD drops out. Only way to get the OD to release is to unlock the TC.
I've got a couple of switches and relays and LEDs to operate the OD and lockup and turn on and off LEDs so I'll know what state they're in. Not too complicated - 1 switch, 1 relay, 2 LEDs, and about 6 or 7 connecting wires.
