366 Spring Install Help

I put in a 366 spring this afternoon but am having a few problems getting the truck dialed in right. It idles high in park or neutral, maybe around 1000 rpm, but when I put it in gear it idles way down and runs rough. Also it seems to have alot of power right off the line but if I am going around 40 or something and kick it down it just slowly accelerates and only makes about 10 psi of boost. I set the throttle shaft index back to where it was stock but it wasnt running right there so I have been moving it around a little but cant get it right, any advice would be great.

Is your idle screw set about where it was before you started the install?

I just re-read the directions an it talked about clicking one of the levers under the pump cover back before you put it back on. I just put the cover back on without oing that, could that be a problem?

Is that the issue where the fuel screw gets in the way of something and borks it up upon reassembly if you're not careful with it?

I fiddled with it like in the sticky, but ended up just taking the screw out first. Less time and less hassle. There are actually two levers. My cover wouldn't go back on without both in the right spot. So if it went on ok, then it is probably something to do with your settings. I adjusted mine with the truck running just to get it dialed in.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I ended up trying to get the cover back on the pump with the safety wire method but ended up just taking the fuel screw out and the top just dropped right back on. So now I have it to the point where the truck runs great down the road, big power difference with the new spring. But when the truck is warm I am still having idle problems. In park or neutral it idles high, maybe around 900-1000, but when I put it in gear, or roll up to a stop sign and come to a stop it idles way down and will stall if I dont give it just a tiny bit of fuel. When it is cold it seems to idle fine. I have played with the throttle index and idle screw a fair amount and this is the best I can get it. Could I have screwed something else up while I was installing the spring?

I'm having almost the same trouble. When I had my fuel screw in 3 turns, It would want to die if you let off the fuel sharply.

I ended up turning it back out and I'm waiting for the 366 spring and idle spring. Then I'll try replacing them and see if I can get that screw turned in then. The power was unbelievable so I'm told this spring is a big improvement as well.

Classic sign of a tired pump. Set it up so it idles OK in gear when hot and keep running it until it starts stalling and not wanting to refire when hot.

How many miles do you usually get out of a VE pump?

Me personally? I don't know, mine hasn't blown up yet.

It's not unusual for them to run 250k, but it's also not uncommon to come across a truck with 150k that no longer has its original pump.

It depends on the maintenance. Good maintenance will make it last longer. Running with a dead lift pump, water in the fuel, poor filtering, lack of lubricity in the fuel, bad veggie mix - any number of things might contribute to a VE's early demise.
