255K Miles Over the Hill?
Now that I've got my foot out of my mouth: I've pretty much committed to buying a '93, but I still have to ask-- Does 255,000 miles constitute a worn-out Cummins? It hasn't been babied, but it runs like a sewing machine, and rigs get a LOT of highway miles around here. Any thoughts?

Nope, 255k is well broken in. If it's in good shape now you can expect at least another 250k out of it. There's a million miler on the site (Mopar2ya). Head's been off once, and he rolled new bearings into it at some point. Still running well without a real overhaul.

A 255,000 mile cummins is no where near worn out. There are several Cummins out there at 500,000 miles plus and still running like a champ. Shoot 255,000 is just getting good and broke in.

Nah, you're right in the ballpark. Maybe just on the high side of the ballpark, but the odometer is really not a gauge of engine life like it is in a gas engine. Heck, mine's got just over 400k and there are some folks well over a half million still blowing soot. Even a moderately modified b5.9 will likely outlast the truck it was originally placed in

so what does kill these mills? my last gasser was killed by a blown power valve in the carburetor. washed me cylinders down with gasoline and i had worse blow-by than a hooker fresh from the dentist office . got crap (7) mileage too! after that, it wouldnt pass smog. thankfully, diesels are smog exempt in Kalifornia!

Like with any CTD, If its in good shape and at a good price BUY IT. Especally sence you said it was babied, if it didnt pull a huge load all its life you should be fine and enjoy it.
What kills a CTD? I would say mainly burt pistions, running it too hot for too long, sometimes fuel issues with a few years. kind of hard to kill one if basic maint. is kept up.
