1st Gen starter removal
I have danced around in a circle shouting incantations, prayed to St Jude, etc and I still can't figure out how to get to BIG red pos wire off. The red cover over the nut has a small hole (?) but I can't get to the nut. Also 1 site says there are 2 bolts holding starter on and this says 3. Which is it? I've only found 2. And where is the crank sensor located and should I replace it too? 220K miles and about to put in 3rd starter. No. 2 cost $500 at the dealer. Autozone wants 175 after core chg.

I just did the starter on my '93. The boot should slide back to expose the large nut. It's a tight fit.
I thought there were 3 bolts holding the starter on too. One was particlalrly hard to reach as I recall. My starter has a lifetime gaurantee from Kragen/Orielly.

There are supposed to be 3 bolts holding it on. The inside one is a pain, I like to take it out first, then the easy 2.
There has to be something wrong if you are putting the 3rd starter on. These ND starters are about as good as they get. What's happening?

I did mine in a parking lot in -47C weather with a junk tool set. The tube was so frozen it broke in half when I pulled on it. It was easy to hold in place with my fingers frozen to the metal.
Just sayin......
If you've done it once it should be an easy go.
Good luck!!!!

the way I did mine was pull the oil tube out of the way, then about 18" in extstions and bring it all the way to the front.
Also adavance auto has it for 139 and Napa will match there price and you get a better one lifetime warrenty

I will say this about starter removal and installation :
For some unknown reason, the factory installed that stiff crank-case vent tube right in the way between the starter and engine-block.
When the starter is re-installed, put that tube OUTSIDE the starter and life is a lot easier.
If I were having a real problem getting at that hidden bolt, I would take a knife to that vent-tube and get it out of the way, then replace it with a length of hose.
I have a neighbor who has had four new starters on his 1st Gen. (I have no idea what he is doing wrong; you would just have to know this guy) and he has adamantly replaced that silly tube back between the starter and engine every time, because that is where Cummins meant it to be.
