Question 1st Gen Body Swap

This is my first post here, so forgive me if things seem disorganized
Just got (what I think to be) a pretty good deal on a rolled 91 D-250, paid 1700 CAD (about 1200 USD).
Good motor, although the lift pump does leak. Hadn't been started in half a year, hand pumped er a few times and turned it over reeeeaaallyy slow, (battery was dead from sitting). Rolled over probably 4-5 times and fired right up!
Idled smooth, no white smoke out of the exhaust on startup, or in the time we had it running. No blow by that I saw/felt. A tiny bit, if any.

Anyways, do you guys think I got an alright deal? I also figure this body will save me some $$$, as the truck I want to steal the body off of has no hood, grille assembly, headlights, etc....
Also, any tips on a body swap? Have the identical truck as this "new" one that has little rust and is pretty straight, just no motor or trans.
Planning on repainting it and putting some sort of spray guard underneath.
I'll attach some pics of the truck below, any input is appreciated!

Cheers,

Carson

Cheers

Yes you did well with the purchase. Motor alone is worth more than that plus you’ll have quite a few useable parts off the rolled truck to use on the donor in the future. 👍

I’d give the lift pump a good look over because they have an internal diaphragm that can rupture and pump diesel into the crankcase. Good luck with it and keep us updated on your progress with the swap

Welcome Carson.

I agree, you made a good score! What year is the donor body? Was is a diesel or gasser?

GREAT score!
It has been many moons since I have found a running 1st gen for that price.

Welcome to DTR.
Make sure to keep us posted on your build.

Thats what I was thinking

As for the lift pump, what should I be looking for? Diesel in the oil?
I'll probably just end up buying a new one...

Donor body is a '91, just like the rolled truck. Used to have a diesel in it, but it was taken out and sold.
Only difference between the two trucks is the donor body had a manual, while the powertrain/frame truck is an auto.

Nice job!! I'd buy all I could for twice that price here. As long as the donor is a '91 vs '91.5 it would be a plug and play kind of deal.

The cab is the worst part to swap, call a couple friends and few beers to lift it, or a tractor with loader if you have no friends...

I am in the process of doing exactly what you mentioned. Took 4 guys to slide the fully assembled cab to the back of the frame and 3 of us to get the bare cab onto the frame. Swapping out the good from the old cab to new one. Biggest pain will be the windshield and back window.

If you're like me you could save some time and just go ahead and bust the windshield.

I have saved two of them by removing the lock strip and carefully pushing them out slowing from the inside . Believe it of not , I sit on the seat and used my feet and pushed them out . Not one issue . When installing , I always install the rubber in the cab first , the glass and lock strip last . Plenty of soapy water and it **** near falls in place . Good Luck , wear your PPE , you can’t buy new eyes but you can buy a new glass .

Remove the lock strip. Get some plastic pry-bars designed for the task and try as best you can to not bend the windshield anywhere. I was helping a pro pull mine out and put just a bit to much pressure and it cracked right down the middle from the rear view mirror. You might try working from top to bottom rater than side to side. Work the top out first then 2 guys on each side work from the top down. YMMV. I've never pulled one successfully. Be sure to save the mounting puck for the mirror when you break the windshield. Some new ones come with the puck and some don't.

Good Luck.
