1989 KSB question

I put my 89 Cummins engine no IC and drive line in a 64 crewcab and have been driving it daily with no problems but after reading another post about the KSB I have been wondering if I hooked it up the right way?I have it wired hot all the time with the key on ...and I had read where someone mentioned the KSB may have a resistor knocking down the voltage to around 8 volts instead of 12 volts? It starts great even when it was down almost to zero...I put the grid heaters on a push button and that seems to work fine....Thanks for all the info I have learned from this forum...Jim

I believe that 12V is what is required to prevent timing advance and increased case pressure. I would suggest a toggle though so you can have the instant bump in timing when voltage is released. But I don't see any issue with what you have.

Key on 12v source is all you need for a non-ic KSB. Since it's a wax-motor-solenoid, a toggle switch won't give 'instant' timing. It'll take a few minutes, give or take, for the solenoid to return to the default position.

What would be the harm in removing the KSB completely and can it be done ??

I have three non-IC trucks and one of them hasn't had a wire on the solenoid for years from the looks of the terminal; what are the pros and cons to this wire not being there ??

Thanks.

Obviously not too harmful if it's made it all these years The KSB disables the control valve such that it can't regulate case pressure. Theoretically, having the pump in this state constantly can cause wear on the vane pump because it's giving all it can all the time.

Ironically, of the four I have, that particular pump is the only one that isn't leaking fuel somewhere.

Oh, now you went and said it out loud--it'll be leaking for sure by tomorrow afternoon

And here I was with a remotely decent outlook on things and you go and cloud up my pretty blue sky.
