1989 Engine Question From Newbie

I posted earlier in the emergency forum about a 1993 engine that was leaking coolant into the oil. After changing the head, oil cooler and gaskets and checking the freeze plugs behind the lifter galley cover I determined that the block is cracked. New engine time! I have found a 1989 engine with 7,000 miles on it. I have read that in 1992 they changed to the smaller injectors and increased pump pressure along with changing the swirl factor on the ports/combustion chamber. Should I molest this low mileage engine by putting my freshly milled 1993 head with 69,000 miles on it? If I did would I also have to change the injector pump from the 1989 to the 1993? I plan on using the turbo off of the 1993 engine as well. Is it worth all the effort or would you just drop the engine in and be done with it? The 1989 engine is coming off an industrial application and is turbocharged.

my '89 does everything and more I would ever ask for. Depends on what type of work you need to do with the truck.

If I were searching for another engine, and I am always looking for a bargain, 1989 year model would be my preference.

I really like the one I have.

I have an 89' engine that is still in the truck running strong. I may sell the whole truck, really don't want to remove the engine. Truck body is shot, mechanicals are all working.

If it were me, I'd probably swap heads with injectors and turbo. Seems like it would be pretty easy while you were changing engines . . .

I assume then that with a CTD that they are sound enough that there isn't any reason to do a head gasket "while its out" like you would do a head gasket and timing chain while you had your 22RE out?

Yeah. Most head gasket problems are caused by what Cummins would call "unauthorized fuel rate adjustments."
