Re:are you happy with the 12v or would you rather have a 24v

I got a 12v, and regreted it at first. I want hp. Lots of it, and it's easier to milk out of a 24v auto than a 12v auto. The 913 pump ended that problem. But then after seeing all the fun that the 24v guys get to have on the side of the road with a busted lift pump or injection pump, I have to admit that I may be getting a 24v some time soon. NOT!!!!! ;D ;D

The only thing that could make my truck better would be a quad or extended cab. I am going to entirely skip the vp44 24v trucks when I can afford to upgrade to a 04 or newer truck with the 48re and ALL of the options. ;D Then my current ride will become my play toy (more so ).

After a ride in a 24v, all I can say is that they are NOISY AS HECK!!! Looking down at the pos vp44 under the hood always gives me flash backs to when I had a first gen with a pos ve44 (almost the same). I was always dreading the day that it would go out. Luckily it held out until I sold it. I don't like the idea of a fuel-lubricated injection pump and neither does anyone who has one.

I got asked for the 90th time today if I have a chip in my truck. All I say is "nope, no chip". Most people don't know how the heck it does what it does. 12 valves are cool!!

Sorry for the long word spew...... guess I'm bored. :

Re:are you happy with the 12v or would you rather have a 24v

We could probably beat this one to death, so I might as well join in, right??

The point about 24valvers- just add a "black box" and have fun has some appeal, but you would probably end up doing more anyway. Stay away from the 9cm2 HY35w turbo (some '01s), too restrictive, excess EGTs.

To be totally fair I own a 12v, and have not even driven a 24v, but as you will see in my sig, I'm having fun with mechanical upgrades. They're really almost as easy as adding a box once you know what to do. I'm also very happy with the mechanical lift pump and oil lubricated injection pump that almost never give problems. ;D

Speaking from the perspective of having both series of engines, I do not think anything is simpler, easier to power up, longer lasting, or as economical as a 12 valve engine.

The choice gets down to asking yourself if you want to keep a truck for the life of the warranty and then dump it for another, or do you want to run it until it no longer will go? If you want the latter, get a 12 valve and you will be running for years and years.

A word of caution, do not entertain purchase of a 24 valve that has run out of warranty unless you are really loaded with plenty of cash for expensive repairs.

All other parts on the engines are about the same in cost.
Now the body/chassis, that's another matter. Inexplicably, it seems the NEWER trucks up to 2002 have MORE steering problems than the older ones do, their steering parts wear out much, much faster....
In that regard, I wish I had an older truck. Makes me wonder what else Dawdge cut corners on, when they built my truck.

Re:are you happy with the 12v or would you rather have a 24v

12 or 24 who cares as long as its a Cummins!!! Sure the 24 has its fuel pump problems but hey 12V's have their problems as well. Such as the KDP i dont know for sure but i would bet a new fule pump for a 24V would be cheaper then having that dowel pin fall out!!(BTW: tom I need to get back to BMD and have you guys do "the KDP fix" on mine) Anyhow on any truck you get you will have to take the good with the bad i prefer a 12V for the simplicity of it i am not much on electronics and all that i like to be able to pop the hood and just go to town without worrying about electronics. Sometimes i wish i could just shell out 500-700 bucks for a box and have instant power but with AT 12v 700 bucks will get you more than that you could get a anyplate you want a set of 370 injectors and 3kGSK and have more power than a 700$ box alone would give! It just all boils down to prefrence i belive! Me if i could get a 03 with a P7100 fuel pump i would be set!!

Re:are you happy with the 12v or would you rather have a 24v

Well, right after purchasing my truck I took a '99 24V for a spin. I was so impressed how smooth and powerful it was compared to the 12V. It felt like a Cadilac (sp?). This was comparing stock vs. stock. The 24V revved higher making up for the looser tc whereas the 12V seemed louder and less powerful - probably because it revved to 2500rpm. I don prefer the lack of electronics stuff to go wrong with the 12V, but I like the smooth power of the 24V. If I could get a good price on a 24V, I wouldn't hesitate to jump on it. Both engines have their issues, and you can't go wrong with either one.

I'll be keeping my 12v. If I had to replace it, I'd still go for a 12v.

Tackett

you could get a 24V and replace the front timing case (plus some other things)with an older 12V unit & now you have the best of both worlds. A mechanical 24V!

I really like my properly valved '96'. I wouldn't have an overvalved unless the 3rd. gen. proves itself. Then in a few years I may consider one. After all, I only have a little over 200,000 miles.

Gene
