white smoke under acceleration
white smoke under acceleration
I adjusted my valves today (they were all a little to tight) then went for a drive. I see a lot of white smoke when i step on it while i am already moving down the road. Ive never noticed this before. It blows a little puff of black when i take off from a standstill. I am trying to improve my mileage (13.3 mpg) so i will be taking her to a shop to get timed. I also read about checking the overflow valve. What do ya check for? I guess this is a lot of questions for just one post. Anybody have any ideas?

What do ya check for?
[/quote]
Overflow "valve" is nothing but a banjo bolt, with spring, check ball, and ball seat. Mine broke the spring into pieces, so fuel pressure went to zip. Didn't have problem w/white smoke, but constant stalling, rough idle, and low power. AFAIK, white smoke can be caused by retarded pump timing, and too much fuel/cold engine. If you pull the overflow valve, be very careful to note the parts orientation, and don't lose the ball seat (tiny), or the sealing washers (copper). The ball seat fits in the spring, and is kinda tough to get all back in w/o dropping. I used a dab of grease to stick everything together to keep from dropping it (again... :-[). The OV is supposed to maintain ~22 psi to the pump, but when it breaks fuel just circulates right back to the tank at full flow. At least that's what I was told...
-Scott
Re:white smoke under acceleration
thanks for responding and telling me the info. sounds like mine is probably fine since i have none of your symptoms. This is one less thing to worry about needin to get fixed.
Re:white smoke under acceleration
bigbaddiesel:

I had a similar problem - low power at take off and poor fuel mileage. No smoke problems, all stock settings. They found low fuel pressure, replaced overflow valve and had timing set to 16 from 14. I'm picking it up tonight. Can let you know the difference. Should see more low end power and better mileage. You may want to check this out yourself. Can't tell if you don't look.
