Is there any other water pump outlet (or inlet) port on the engine?
There can be one on the back of the engine by knocking out a freeze plug and attaching a plate from Cummins with a port ($50).
Two bolt holes are already threaded on the block for attachment.

Thanks Bill.. Would it be possible to get a non-sca coolant filter and use as a "full-flow" filter? In other words, put it inline with the heater core. So coolant would flow from: water pump -to filter -to heater core -back to engine. I'm just not sure if those filters were designed to be used as a full-flow filter or bypass only. Not sure how the non-sca ones are but the sca one I have now has a rubber restrictor built into it.

If so, what if the filter clogs. Would it cause any harm to the water pump and/or engine if fluid stops flowing in those lines?

I see no harm with a filter in either of the heater lines. Even it plugs up there will be no damage, just no heat.
Might have to change the filter more frequently at first till the coolant is cleaned but after that a filter should last a long time.

I was reading in a machinery lubrication magazine where the experts are now recommending all fluids, oil, water and antifreeze be filtered before you pour them in. Showed magnified pictures of brand new oil before and after filtering, amazing all the big chunks in the new stuff that you can't see.
Don't know if I'll ever prefilter my fluids, too **** for me, but gave me greater respect for Caterpillar's new ultimatum that warranty will be revoked if filters are prefilled.

pre-filtering

Would it be reasonable to pre-fill the filter by dumping the fluid into the little holes around the side instead of the big one in the middle. Then it has to go through the filter prior to getting access to the engine. This would be a PITA if the filter has an anti-drainback valve but the Fleetguard filters I use don't. For fuel, I pressurize the fuel tank and let it fill itself; beats pumping the lift pump.

Glad I asked, I might just add my coolant filter inline to the heater core then.

Wow, that's amazing about the pre-filtering. Never really crossed my mind that new oil would be contaminated like that! But it makes sense.

I've heard of folks screwing in a 6" piece of pipe, think it's 1" into the middle hole while filling.
Blocks off the clean side and doubles as a handle.

Anyone know of a full-flow, non-sca coolant filter that doesn't have a restrictor built into it?? I'm having a hard time finding one locally, and online pictures don't do any good.

Well, I ended up un-installing the coolant filter assembly. I couldn't find a filter without the restrictor in it and I i'm just going to stick to the normal maintenance intervals for changing my coolant. I like to keep things simple. It wasn't a bad idea to have one though. In bypass mode it worked cause I cut the filter open and all the sca additive was gone and the filter was somewhat (not significantly) dirty from the couple months I had it on.

If you remove that bolt, you promptly reinstall it and torque to spec without running the engine.

if you tee in to the heater core lines you might end up loosing heat depending on the filter if it restricts flow to and from the core , ask me how I know.
