Angry Water Pump!!

First day back from vacation and I went to pick my dogs up from the kennel (in my newly modified truck!) and blew my water pump on the way home!!

I just had the truck modified and it's hard to keep my foot out of it .

EGTs are running around 600-800 in normal driving conditions and up to 1000 when I have my foot in it.

I still can't believe the acceleration when I step on it (after TC locks) - should've got the 60 lb boost gauge!!

Was it the mods that killed my H2O pump or was it my newly acquired driving habits?
How's the Napa pump?
Any guidelines on coolant or will the daily special at WalMart be OK?

Thanks!
Bob

If the coolant looks cloudy, flush it and put in fresh. Get some coolant conditioner from your auto parts store for diesels and add the initial charge and add once per year after that. Low silicate antifreeze is recommended. read the fine print.

the B series cummins is a parent bore block, not sleeved... IE, no need for antifreeze conditioner.

Thanks Forrest!

How do I know what "series" Cummins motor I have? I presume it goes by model year, but does the spec plate under the hood give this information?

Also...why would sleeved cylinder walls need the conditioner and B series motors not?

Thanks again!!

all of the 5.9's are B series

sleeved blocks can experience cavitation in the coolant between the sleeves and the block and it'll errode either or both...

it is of no concern on a parent bore block.

Bob, use distilled water, especially since you probably are on a well out there. Distilled water loweres the cylinder head temp a tad...

It wasn t the mods, just bad luck. If your only seeing 1000......either you need to slid the plate forward (and get more power) or your egt is very slow. Have you towed yet since the mods? Am for 1250 or so, on the hill of your choice towing.

edit: pre turbo egt placement

BTW, Ill be out in Pahrump atleast once in the next week or so....maybe twice.

Thanks for the explaination Forrest!!

Hey Jon...glad to get this "bad luck" out of the way now instead of 2 weeks from now!!

I'm only seeing 1000 under acceleration, and frankly, it keeps going up as long as I have my foot in it. But I haven't had the chance to get on a really "open" road to test the speed...I always back off around 80 MPH. Haven't towed since I got it back or since I've been back from vacation. May take the 5er for a ride after I fix this water pump. I have a couple of gallons of distilled at the house and have a "soft water" spigot on the side of the house that feeds from my softener. I'll make sure both go in the radiator after the coolant.
