Valve clarence ???

Well Just had the valves adjusted and the engine timed and when I went to pick it up the mechanic told me that the valves really needed adjusting, said the intake were down to 5 thousands Clarence and they should be ten thou.

And I remember reading in the Cummings manual that the engine only needed a valve adjustment at around 60,000 miles and it would be good for ever. Well almost. There is only 90,000 miles on it now, I wouldn't think that they would be that far out...................................But then again.................Who knows? "Only the Shadow knows."

Oh Sick

Valve adjustment schedules vary by how much you let the truck idle and how hard you use it. Let it idle alot, I would say cut your clearance checks in half. Only short idle time, keep it on schedule. Some ISB's that I have set were really off at 60k and others where within the limit at 110k. The worst that I have seen by far was a 3126 in an FL70. Intake and exhaust specs are 15 and 25. Some of the intakes where as low as 4, ranging all the way up to 24. While the worst exhaust was 6. Just remember if you let it idle for long periods of time, it would be best to check them more frequently.

Re:Valve clarence ???

Valves wear at the seat usually and that causes the valve to go higher up into the cylinder head. Tony

Or like DM01 says Stresssss!

Ok I can go for seat wear, but I have not seen this a problem on a turbo engine with the hardened seats. Normally the linkage wear will exceed the valve seat wear. After 138,000 I had one .004 loose and two a couple of thousands loose which was probably a sloppy adjust. Now if this was an old 318cu Dodge they like to go 1/8 or better into the head Anyway, good answer to the question, thanks. It is not something that I have run into in the past and I have a lot of experience on diesel. If I found one that tight I would start thinking of going through the head.

Re:Valve clarence ???

My manual suggest getting the valves checked for the first time at the 24,000 mile service. I did and they were out some, but not bad. I would probaly go every 50,000 now that I have a base line to compare to. I think though, that it also depends on what the engine is seeing on a daily basis. Some one how only comutes to work and back, ok. But someone who hauls heavey, and works the engine I'd have to say thay would need alittle more attention. Also it you ever had a over heating problem, I'd have them checked.

Actually I would think that the short runs and commuting would he a lot rougher on the truck than hauling steady. Using it commercial has a lot less starting, idling and stops and starts. At well over 100,000 miles I had one valve .004 loose and none tight. It really did not need the adjustment, and I do use it to its full capacity.
