Transfer Vs Lift pump

Same thing? I gave that part # to the guy at the Cummins house and he was calling it a transfer pump. But I saw another post here where someone mentioned dropping the fuel tank to get to the transfer pump?

Any writeups on swapping out the lift pump?

I called O'Reilly's, he told me $142.00 for the pump. The Cuminn's house says they're $85. Hmm...

Lift or transfer pump, same thing.
Think Cummins is looking up the wrong part, the price is too low. My bet is you need to tell them to be certain they are looking up a '98, not a '98.5.

Swapping pumps is easy if you trash the stock bolts that hold it down and use studs and nuts instead.

Thanks, maybe I'll have him check a '97, it should be the same part.

I'm going to use the studs too, did you leave the studs in, or replace with stock bolts once you had it seated?

I gave the Cummins guy part# 3936316, he told me that's been replaced by part# 4944710 for $85.

I was told that a 97 truck can use a pump from Case/International For $85 The part number is JP36313 and the gasket number is J939285 You may half to switch some of the fittings but it should work. The best price that could find for the carter was $149 Pm me if you like and tell me what the problem is with yours I have work on my fuel system a lot and know just about everthing about it.

Looks like 4944710 is the right part. He told me the old part# 3936316 was around $158, but the replacement dropped significantly to $81.83, good news for us 12v guys!

Leave the studs in, ditch the bolts.

Using the 8mmx30mm studs, you just leave them in the engine, and get some nuts to tighten down the pump.

Looks exactly like the one I put in my truck about 18 months ago. Cost me about $160 from O' Reilly's. Still going strong..... Dodge tried to sell me a kit to switch over to an electronic pump. I figured that the mechanical one lasted over 200K, so I'd stick with it.

Does anyone have any instructions on how to actually change the pump? Maybe a picture or two? I have a list of small items I need to do to mine and the lift pump just started ticking like crazy so that's now on the list.

Here you go...sorry, theres no pics...

Would be a good idea to check fuel pressure before going through the trouble and cost of changing the LP.
