Trans problems

A friend of mine has a 98 12V auto trans. About 4 months ago he had an art carr TC installed at a local diesel shop. Everything was good until one day comming home from a long trip it was acting like the trans was staying in lock up. He took it back to the shop and they have had it sence 3 weeks before christmas trying to fix it. They put back in the same TC that they took out and didn't fix it. Swaped computers w/ another truck. So, they put in a new trans same problem still there. They have been running pressure checks and all kinds of stuff trying to figure it all out. I used to work at that shop and I looked at it very little and I'm still stuck on beliveing it electrical because I can get my 96 to do the same thing by grounding the lock up solinoid. I'm just wondering if yall have seen anything like this and if you can help me. If they don't get it fixed this week were going to go pick it up.

Thanks,
Joey

Sure sounds as if it has to be electrical, soince that is what makes the TC lock and unlock. If it is staying locked, there must be a short to ground somewhere in the wiring, I am thinking. Not really sure about the 98.

Yeah. Must be electrical. Many of us here have torque converter lockup switches(also known as mystery switches) that locks the converter when we want. Make sure the pin 54 wire isnt grounded out somehow(at least thats the one it is on a 94-95. May be diff on his). Thats what our torque converter lockup switches do is ground the pin 54 wire, which makes the converter lockup. Does it lock just as soon as he hits 2nd gear or what?

It stays locked up in all gears including reverse. I ohmed out pin 54 and it did not show any conunity to ground. It will act the same even if disconnect the harness at the trans. I'm lost on this problem.
I have the same switch on my truck and it acts just like that but it does it in reverse and I can't get mine to do the same.

Thanks,
Joey

trans problem

jkeane,

I would try a phone call to a trans guy to discuss it with them.
They may have run into this before.
I had mine done at Dave Goerend's to lock up quicker. The vb change was the key to locking up the triple disc.
Just a thought, check yours? You may be pushing way too much fluid???????

Good luck,

Wayne

could be something as dumb and easy to fix as the tps sensor since it stays locked up with BOTH converters then id check all the wires running to and from the tps and check with the trans guys like MY WORLD told ya
