?trans over heating

I have a 96 dodge with 206k at 120k I had the trans overhauled because it would not shift right. the shifting problem is gone but I have a new problem. If I run the truck hard for 1hr or so or pull a load the trans will not take off from a stop. the truck takes off verry slow with lots of smoke. when I am just running it easy and no load there is no problems. any ideas????

My first guess would be a bad torque converter, but it can also be that the bands are not properly adjusted or the clutches are slipping. Either problem will generate a great deal of excess heat in the transmission. But, if it is clutches or bands it generally will discolor the fluid and continue to get worse. In any case the transmission would require a pressure test to determine which it is for sure.

Bad Dodge- it sounds to me like you put it in limp mode. If you shut the truck off at a stop light and then start it back up, does it take off fine?

There is a resistor that you can put in a line off the pcm. Or a valve body assistant.

I have not tried to turn off the truck when it happens. But it is going in to limp mode. Next time it happens I will try turning the truck off. Where can I find a resistor for the pmc.

This has been a problem for a long time and I just cant pull anything with this truck because of this problem so it is grate to hear something that makes senses to me and might I might not have to pay for a hole new trans.

Bad Dodge- call Haisley Machine and tell Patty you want one of their Valve Body Assistant's. It comes w/ directions and everything. I think this will solve the problem.
Or you could call Dave at Goerend Brothers Transmissions and see if he thinks this is the problem.
