Tranny Going?

Yesterday I was going up a long hill and needed to pass a vehicle. I pulled it down into 2nd gear, expecting additional passing power. Instead, the truck actually slowed down. I had to go back in Drive to regain my speed.

Is this sound like a bad 2nd gear clutch.?

Works fine in drive.

97 12 valve, Everything standard, no modifications at all.

Appreciate any advise.

bout 55. It runs real good with overdrive either in or out. But in 2nd, it seemed to have more power but actually slowed down.

hes refering to the point where your truck runs out of rpm gain. usually limited by your fuel plate and or governor. stock governor takes you somewhere around 2300rpm depending on your pump. which is why i asked earlier what your rpms were at 55 in 2nd. if your over 2000 you wont be gaining R's. unless you upgraded your gov. springs.

also at 55, i'd think ur TC would be locked up, and when u downshifted it unlocks and u loose the 1:1 power ratio, and that mixed with the defueling would equal slowing down. Install a "3gsk" and u won't have the defuling problem, u'll be able to rev around 3200-3400 still fueling.

But also, ur trans sounds like a candidate for a upgraded Torque converter and valve body, it would really change ur truck.
