Top Dead Center?
When you are close to TDC, adjust one of your #1 valves down a good bit. I put a dial indicator on it at this point. Bar the engine until you get just a couple thou movement on the dial. Mark the balancer to some point of reference. Back the valve out, bar the engine past TDC, set the valve back to where you had it initially, and bar the engine backwards until you get the same movement on the dial. Mark the balancer again. The point between these two marks is TDC. If none of the valves are moving as you bar the engine over (both should be closed) you are on TDC of the compression stroke. If they are open a bit, then you are at TDC on the exhaust stroke. At this point, it might be handy to mark the pump gear with something to tell you when you are at TDC. I ***** punched mine, so it will be quick to set it when I need to time it or adjust the valves.
What are you trying to do Adj the valves or time the engine? To adj the valves rotate the engine untill the #2 exhaust valve is all the way open that is TDC after adjusting the 1st set of valves turn the engine over untill the #5 exhaust valve is all the way open and do the 2nd set of valves.
Hope this helps
