You could do like you were timing on eng. , let some fuel gravity feed into the pump , turn over till it starts coming out of #1 DV , put on truck and fine tune .

Normally you don't use the above pin when removing/replacing a pump. On the side of the pump that would face towards the outside when installed there is a hex head cap that has a pin under it. You pull the pin out and turn it around, rotate pump until the pin falls in place, replace the cap. Install the pump with the engine at TDC and you should be at stock timing.

On the left side of the pump(the side that would face the drivers side fender with the pump mounted on the engine) about 8" back from the pumps mounting surface, you will see what looks like a big nut about 1" in dia give or take (its been awhile) remove the cap and you will find a nylon pin, pull the pin out of the cap. You want to turn the pump shaft while looking into the hole where you just removed the cap from. You will see a tooth come around, turn the shaft until the tooth is in the center of the hole and lock it into place with the nylon pin. This is TDC, you can then turn the engine to TDC and bolt the pump on and it will run but you will have to advance the timing. Sorry I dont have any pics but its really easy to figure it out when you look at everything.

You need a timing set( snapon has a nice one for 200 bucks) with the pump at TDC and both timing pins pulled, use the timing set to adjust your timing where you want it 16* works nice, pin your pump, remove the timing gear( just pop it off the shaft) turn the engine back to TDC remove all pins reinstall the gear........its easy. Just becareful not to turn the engine with the pins in,they will shear off.

so you have to turn the shaft in order to advance it.

With the pump on the engine and the pump gear pulled(poped off the shaft) turning the shaft will advance/retard the timing.......however you need a timing set to see what you are doing.
