timing advice

I just recently ordered my snap on timing set and i am wandering what i should time it at.
I have the 215 pump, the truck has a new reman engine i just put in, bosch 370s, straight piped, and a s&b cold air intake. i know that the pump has been messed with but i have not tore it open yet to look inside. and dont worry i got my boost and pyro gauges already.
it has stock turbo, stock head gasket and bolts
i was thinking somewhere around 15.5?

any input is appreciated, also anything else i should do

That's a good start. We shot for 15 to 16 on mine and ended up with 15.7 after the gear was tightened. Much more than that causes real slow spoolup.

my friend just did 16.5 on stock injectors and loves it, ill be doing mine at 16.5 soon as well. the more fuel you add the more timing you need to burn all the fuel so i would do at least 16.

you will really notice sluggish spool up but it will run cooler at higher rpms and normally better fuel mileage. mess around with your overflow valve, fuel plate, afc housing. i put a spring out of a pen in my overflow. 30+ psi. How much did the kit cost?

I'm running 18.5 on the 97 but I think 16.5 is about the best unless you do a lot of mods. I have no problems spooling the turbo but it comes on at about 1700-1800 rpm and I mean it really comes on!!!

i paid $163 for the snap-on set but i get a discout for being in a tech school. normally i think they are $236.

Crabbelle, what fuel plate do you recomend? and isnt it bad to run to much boost on stock head gasket and bolts?

crabbelle has a home made 10 plate slid all the way forward, i made it myself. you should be fine up to 35 psi of boost with 16.5 timing which works good with a stock turbo because thats when it loses its efficiency. any more than that and youre just pushin hot air in the engine which is bad for power and your HG. that boost/ timing combo should work REALLY well on the highway but still might not be enough to clear up your 370's but it will lower your egt's a good bit.

I'd be hesitant about 16.5* timing, 35 psi, and a #10 slid forward with a stock HG. It might be ok, but isn't it riding on the redline?

i believe it to be where i draw the line on the stock head gasket. any more mods (like water/meth) that increase cylinder pressure and youre askin for trouble. i havnt heard of anyone having issues with this setup as far as i know. ive heard of people blowing gaskets when they crank up the boost for "more power" which really isnt the case at 40-45 psi but i dont like to see past 35 even with stock timing because theres no power to be gained on a stock charger so its pointless and bad for your HG. some people play it a little safer than this setup but i cant see ANY problems with 16* timing and 30psi if you wanna be on the almost definite safe side (i will never say completely definite), the sad thing is theres always freak incidents where you are playing safe and something happens and there are people that go all out and have nothing, sometimes its the luck of the draw.
