Thrust bearing for torqueing the injection pump gear?

It's been said that the Snap-On timing set doesn't come with the torrington bearing that's used when seating the gear back onto the tapered shaft on the injection pump. Does anyone have the dimensions of this bearing or better yet, the part # from Timken or other manufacturers?

You really dont need to use it. I have timed quite a few and never used it.

Miller SPX p/n 6862 - got it but didn't use it. Looks like it would be a PITA to get on and off - especially if you dropped one of the pieces down the front of the cover

I talked to a very experienced authority on doing timing and he said not to worry about using it - so I didn't and don't see why it is needed now that I have done mine (twice).

thrust bearing

I talked to a guy who made some of the very first fuel plates and he told me that when the bearing comes apart and all of those needles fall into the gear cover you will not like it. It happened to him. That was good enough for me. jimk

OK, I think I'll forget about looking for a thrust bearing! So, when you guys seat the gear, do you just torque it down to the specified torque and forget it, or do you for some reason loosen the nut and re-torque it after the gear has been seated? (I know, it's a silly question)

Just get her seated with 30 ft. lbs (make sure the gear doesen't slip on the shaft during this), then crank her down to 144 ft. lbs. That's what my service manual says, and I haven't had a problem.

I have learned to torque the nut to 165 to 175ftlbs.

I think the most important thing is that both the shaft and the gear is absolutely clean, I use contact cleaner and does not leave any film on either , where the brake cleaner does leave a film , we had a new guy one time doing a gear and use brake cleaner on the gear and shaft and when on the dyno , the gear slipped twice on him before he finally ask around why , told him to use contact cleaner and didnt have anymore problems . and we dont use any thrust bearing , I have done many of them , at least with the VP44 you have a keyway , some of the other pumps dont have a key on the shaft.

I never torque that gear not more then 125 foot pounds , the 144 ft. pd. torque is for the CAPs pump on the ISC , both of those torque specs. are updated torque specs.

OK my mistake LOL I just read that your talking about the inline injection pumps and not VP44 , yes the torque is 144 ft.pd. also the type of cleaner is more important also , you will read in both manual how it ok to clean with brake cleaner on the ISB and then in the B5.9 manual how important it is to use a non residual cleaner be use for inline pump . I will shut up now
