And Then........?

Truck is ticking so I replace overflow valve as guided by fellow CTD owners. As soon as I start the truck after installing new valve the ticking is gone. For about a minute, then I get the ticking that wont go away, it increases with RPM. Soooo, I replace the lift pump with the expectations of having no more ticking, after all, I replaced all the bad tickers with new ones. As soon as I start the truck after lift pump install, tick tick tick tick, the overflow valve tick is back! Is this a cycle I am going to have to continue repeating or what? Has anyone had the same problem and if so what was the cure? IM TIRED OF THE DARN TICKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine ticks too, I will start to worry when the ticking stops. The majority of 12 vlv trucks I have been around tick to some extent.

Well hopefully someone has dealt with this before and can guide me in the right direction. Should I get another OF Valve?

Can you describe the tick sir! just kidding, I have a 94 CTD and it doesnt tick that I know of other than the standard valve noise. I know that is not much help but either mine is broken or yours is!

every new overflow valve i got from marty ticked pretty loud, it is normal. when the pump pushes a shot of fuel at the injector pump, the overflow opens then slams shut when the pressure is below 25 or so. i hooked up a gauge on one and you would not belive the pulses when it is running. the gauge was slaping between 20 and 50 with 2 different lift pumps and 2 different over flow valves.

I replaced my OF valve recently as a preventative maintainence measure. It did not tick. Marty's new OF valve also does not tick. (In my engine.) It seems that those who have ticking will still have ticking after replacing it.

Well it TICKS! Driving me nuts at a idle. Im ebarrased, almost like when you hear a guy driving down the road with an obvious exhaust leak and I think to myself "Is he too lazy to fix it or doesnt know how"? Neither of which describe me, just want the ticking to stop. Guess I will just have to live with it.

I think you are making more out of it than it really is just because you are focusing your attention on it. I sort of doubt if other people who are hearing it are giving the tick much notice. Many non-diesel people I know think they all sound like shaking a coffee can full of rocks.

You should visit a diesel shop sometime and listen to a P pump on a test stand.
I guarantee you will jump back thinking a perfectly good pump is going to explode, they are really noisy.
Such is the way with a diesel engine.

I've got a ticking from the fuel tank area... could it be a pulse in the return line? Can hear it at idle, usually when the engine is cold..

My ticking became much less noticeable when I advanced the timing.
