my friend called me today and said that his truck is stuck in 5th. it is a 97 4x4 5speed he said he had to throw it in 4low and drive it home but the stick won't move out of 5th. this wouldn't be the 5th gear nut would it or he would have just lost the gear. he just bought the truck last week and now its setting there anyone ever had this problem or know how to fix it

 

i have had this happen to a couple of different trucks. the real fix seems to be a teardown. and see whats up. one thing it the return spring on the shift cover. i just pulled the shifter out while the truck was stuck in gear,and rolled the truck backwars a little bit. the factory tire iron works pretty good at getting it out of 5th. it was not easy but it popped out and i drove the truck for 5k miles after that. then the c clip poped off on the counter shaft and it lost 5th gear. but we poped the tail shaft off and put on a new c clip. back on the road again. mike
