just wondering if i'm getting ready to have problems. my trans has been acting like its slipping for the first two to five min after starting up cold. after it warms up it seems fine. i have about 77,000 act miles on a 94. trans fluid smells fine. input please. thanks jared

 

Try letting it warm up in neutral for a few minutes. When mine sits the fluid will drain back and if I try to go right after I start it, it won’t move at all. Nothing wrong, just the nature of the beast. Cold weather will make it seem sluggish until the fluid gets warmed up.

So you have had the truck for a year I see. Did it do the same thing last year when it got cold or is this something new? Have you serviced the tranny?

 

i t did do it last year, but i dont remeber it doing it that bad. i did service the trans about 5000 miles ago. i didnt find anything abnormal, fluid was fine no big chunks in the pan. thanks jared

 

Sounds like the nature of the beast then, nothing to worry about it's normal.

 

Just be aware that if the bombing bug bites too hard, you will be looking into getting an upgraded transmission. It is a good idea to keep that in mind so that you have the money ready and know who you are going to use when that time comes....

As far as your current situation, that is something that usually occurs in colder climates.... Typically, I start the truck, put in neutral, set high idle, go have some more coffee, and by the time i get back to the truck, the cab is warm and so is everything else....

 

How does one manage a high idle on a 12V besides a block of wood or brick?

A piece of 1/2" PVC pipe with a T on each end that gets wedged between the seat and go pedal and adjusted with power seat....

Actually working on an adjustable throttle cable that can be placed at the bottom of dash and a handle pulled out to increase idle or pushed in to decrease idle.... ill let you know how that works......

 

the trans is my next planed mod. i just didn't want to do it untill spring and /or replace a good trans that will last untill then. i think with what i've learned from this site i need to address the trans before i go to much further. the 6 plate and elbo were huge improvements.

The trans has a loose converter bushing. Normal wear, don't worry about it yet. Start it and let it lube in neutral for 30-45 seconds before driving it. A very common issue with all Dodge rear wheel drive autos. Nature of the beast is a good title.
A good trans guy can modify it so it will lube in park, some aftermarket trans do this. Ask when you have it rebuilt.


Does anyone know where an adjustable hand throttle can be bought? Someone said , some time ago, that truck stops have them. I can't find them. (It's the cable I can't find) , there are plenty of truck stops!

 

I got an adjustable throttle cable from TSC.

 

I have heard that the seals in the transmission can cause that to happen. When they are cold they leak. If it were mine I would start and go to neutral to charge the converter, ect. If you have seal problems then a little warm up is in order. I use TDH in my transmission in the 95 an have had no problems , it is a little thicker. One fellow suggested using synthetic hydraulic fluid used in tractors. That sounded good to me also. JimK
