Steering play

I have a 97' 2500 Ram with the cummins which I love ,but lately the steering is giving me grief I've replaced the track bar and steering pump (just after market)
The problem I'm having is excessive play in the steering wheel. It holds well on the road the problem is you can turn the wheel almost a quarter turn each way before it responds. would this be caused by the track bar or just another worn pump?

I installed a DSS steering stabilizer when the pump was last changed which was about 2 yrs ago

I'm looking at replacing the track bar again with the 03 conversion kit. Also the steering column when i grab it and rock it back and forth still has lots of play when the steering wheel is locked,is it possible the column is shot?

I'm just looking for some ideas on where to start and see if i can rectify this problem for good

I suggest having a friend turn the wheel back and forth while you lie under the truck and see what is loose. If you used a stock track bar when you replaced it, it is probably loose. But 1/4 of a turn is an awful lot so I would think that you should be able to see some stuff that is not tight.

Sometimes the steering boxes get loose and the steering is sloppy or were the gear box bolts to the frame may crack if you run big tires.

Nerka--On my 97 I had the same symptoms you describe. Had someone turn the steering wheel while I watched the bottom end of the gearbox and I found lots of slop. Replaced the bottom steering gear and, for me, problem solved.

Good Luck.
