shifter removal tool
For the early style trans all you need is a hammer and screwdriver. Once the shifter boot is out of the way take a look at the cup on the inside of the shifter tower (the shifter goes through it). You will notice that there is a slight corner on four sides. Hook a corner of it with a screwdriver and hit down and counter clockwise to remove the shifter. The opposite to reinstall it. On the install it may be easier to have a friend holding the ring down while you hit it with a hammer.

Must be an earlier shifter-the tool to remove mine (once you have removed the obvious 4 bolts holding it to the transmission) is a human hand. You reach out, grasp the shifter, and lift it out of the transmission.

98 changed the shifter tower. Early models took the screw driver method and late models bolt the shifter in. Either tower will interchange. There is also a difference in the way the 4x4 shifter works. A little late on the info but will help someones search later.
