"Sewing Machine Oil" Manual Trans Fluid
Well, I checked my fluid last night by sticking my finger in the hole....
...
...
what I found was thin "watery" if you will oil (felt kind of like "sewing machine oil" or "3 in one"). Seems to me it is worn out, or someone put the wrong kind of oil in there. It had grey-black specks and powdery gook in it, but was otherwise clear.
So I'm thinking I will change it tonight with the closest match to factory original fluid I can find on my way home, probably Valvoline synthetic 70w90w. I was told the factory original was syntorq lt 75w85w gl-4.

Cheap Bastard
Being the cheap fellow that I am, I ordered the AMSOIL MTG Product, after calling a Chevy dealer near me who quoted 22.89 per quart for the factory oil. AMSOIL MTG is 9.90 per quart.
A funny thing happened when I called though, that might explain the light oil in my transmission now. When I first asked for manual transmission oil, thet suggested their MTF product, which is a 5-30 weight product. I'm wondering now if that is what the previous owner put in there, and why the parts are "rattling around" in there so much.
Their MTG product is a 75-90w product.
AMSOIL claims the MTG product is a direct replacement for the factory oil.
Ideal for NV-4500 Transmissions
MTG is a thermally stable, extreme pressure formulation that resists heat, oxidation, acid build-up and varnish. It is the ideal gear lube for high temperature applications, including the New Venture NV-4500 transmission, which retains heat due to its cast iron housing and is often subjected to heavy loads and high torque from turbo-diesel engines.
AMSOIL MTG is the replacement fluid for GM part #12346190 and Chrysler part #4874459 (Chrysler specification #MS-9070).
......If my tranny falls apart...you can say "I told you so"

Put in my AMSOIL last night
I replaced the trans oil last night with the AMSoil, and it does sound a little quieter this morning with less transmission gear sound coming from it.
Thanks

shifing
she is shifting pretty smooth. It was decent before, but smoother now.
And there is less whirling, rattling etc.
The old stuff was pretty darn black looking.
