question about my tranny

I have a 95 2500 4x4 120,000 miles #6 fuel plate,megacannon,4in exhaust,5in lift, 36in tires

i dont know much about trannys so i have a few questions. when i get on it from a stop it dont put the power to the ground all i get is rpms and smoke. it shifts fine up to 3rd but it dont like to shift to o/d. when it finally does it feels like it grabs another gear in between the shift.then it has plenty of power.

is this the t/c slippen, bad tranny or do the bands just need adjusted

I don't know much about it either, but possibly the stall speed is too high. My ATS is set up with a stall speed which matches the engine power curve and my rig feels like a manual trans going through the gears with little or no slip. I get a definite change in speed for any change in rpm.

You have the RH tranny.....and its a petty sloppy shifting tranny....with a new torque converter and a V/B shift kit these trannys work 100% better...I did this to my tranny over a year ago and its still shifts great....if you do upgrade your tranny besure to replace the cooling lines because the quick disconnects on these lines can uncouple and dump all your fuild on the road ("it happened to me")

It kindof sounds like the tc slipping to me. I really don't know that much about trannys either but if your rpms are going up from a stop and you are not moving I would look at the tc.

Halerazor: You have taken your 160 hp Cummins and increased the power to the 250 rear wheel hp range. The increased hp has given you a much higher "stall speed" with the stock torque converter. The increased hp overruns the stock stator/rotor sized for 160 hp and you get excess rpms.

The shifts you are seeing are 3rd TC unlocked to OD TC unlocked (the shift in the middle) and finally OD TC unlocked to OD TC locked. The TC lockup is the shift where you feel the power.

You need a new torque converter where the stator and rotor have been redesigned to match your power. You also need a modified valve body or to turn up the pressures in your stock valve body for your tranny clutches to handle the increased hp.

Research the various tranny rebuilders, you will need their services before long with your engine modifications. When your tranny does go (not if but when), do not get a rebuild to stock from a local tranny rebuilder. Get a tranny rebuild that will take your increased hp.
