Question About Modifying The Afc
Most people are happy with sliding it forward on the slots and turning the star wheel full forward. All free and reversible changes. Next step is a longer but lower tension spring. Allows better smoke control.
Gutting it gains little except more smoke. Properly adjusted and you still get full rack travel.

Just slide it as far forward as you can, and crank the start wheel forward as well.
I think cutting or gutting the afc is foolish, not reversible. The best thing for modifying it is to swap out the afc spring for a lighter spring from TST.
And the reason you want a functioning afc is because when you get as heavily fueled as my trucks, you can't have tons of fuel flooding the bottom end when the airflow isn't there, absolutely kills performance. A functioning afc is also key in getting the best mileage and drivability while cruising.

While I'll admit gutting the AFC isn't for everybody, it is still very drivable, even smoke free. Just need a steady foot. Its not a truck you'd want to loan out to an inexperienced driver, since it doesn't take much pedal to start leaving clouds of smoke, but thats just one more reason I have to not lend out my truck. And gutting it is completely reversible.

I'm with Mike on this one, once you get enough fuel happening your afc becomes very important on a DD. I would mod the AFC for full travel and keep it whole.
The 370's are gonna have to wait, as the 12v is on a stand, not in a vehicle. Thats gonna be a race truck anyhow. I am driving with 150hp DDP's in the 24v with a gutted AFC, 10 plate full forward, and have absolutely no problems driving smoke free. And the 62 is fairly slow to build boost. I can't hot rod smoke free, but I can drive daily smoke free. The twins will help the hot rodding though.
Take the housing off. Looking at the front of it, take teh screw off the front, pull the rod that it was locking in, and the foot will drop out. Put the pin an screw back in, put housing back on, and you're done. You can throw the foot away if you like. I keep it in my Cummins tool kit if I ever want to put it back.
Not that it matters, but figured I'd chime in:
After reading about the AFC I decided to gut mine and see how it was. Very easy to do and I think the results are well worth it.
It does not smoke unless you want it to. I like the feeling of it much better than before and I think it is more responsive.
Of course it is 100% reversible just incase someone else needs to drive the truck or if I decide to sell it.
