Please help before I drive my truck into a tree

So... I have a 97 2500 with a tranny that is really making me mad. Intermittently, the transmission will search for gears. I can always tell when its going to happen because my tach will start jumping all over the place, then the tranny starts jumping around. Sometimes it drives fine but, this problem is happening more and more often. I have tried cleaning and wrapping all of the grounds in aluminum foil and elec. tape, adjusting the bands, changing the tranny fluid, but nothing seems to work. I am at wits end, and could really use some guidance. Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please do not curse in posts... I do understand your frustration...

Thanks-
madhat

Are you sure you found ALL the ground points, because that sounds like a loose, or chaffed wire or bad ground for sure. I know on the 3rg gens, there is a couple wires that rub near the oil filter and cause all kinds of gremlins. There is a sticky note about it in the top of this forum. Good luck and hope you find your gremlins.

I moved this to the 2nd gen forum, he said it was a 97 2500.

Now to your problem, check your TPS

Dito on the TPS also it could be the factory temp sender. I had the same problem with mine, replaced both no more problem. The TPS will cost you $200 though.

another thing to look at with the tach and tranny both going nuts is the crank pos. sensor...I've seen those cause this kind of problem as well.

I would also say its the CPS. My truck was doing the same thing. I would be driving and the next thing I would know is the tach would jump twice (or more) and the truck would go from OD to drive. I don't know if the computer was thinking it was slipping and thats why it down shifted or what. Anyways, I replaced the CPS and haven't had a problem since
