Overflow valve!
My old 96 has a slight miss at idle nothing major,I looked at the over flow valve it looks like the 2 peice one that comes from the factory. Could this be my problem I don't have any trouble starting the engine? also blue smoke at idle ( Timing ) I have never checked the timing, looks like it has been adjusted at one time maybe at the dealer under a recall? Any body have a link of steps for timing, I have the tools and a list of mm to degress
any help would be great . Also what is the best timing for my truck I haul a lot of weight time to time. Engine is stock except for exhuast. Any help would be great.

For timing check here: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1994/18-10-94a.htm
Try that before you try something else so you will know what fixed your problem. Don't go to a dealer or Cummins for the overflow valve. They are too expensive. I did some looking for you. Get one from here:
Precision Diesel Injection and Turbo Inc.

$22 + $5 shipping and handling.

I can by a over flow valve from peirs for 75.00 bucks canadian,
I think I will check the valve to see if the spring is broken, and will do the timing also.

With the exchange rate duty and shipping it would work out to about the same amount of money. I can drive down the road and pick it up from peirs shop. I wish i could buy the valve hear for 22.00 dollars cdn. Thats a good price. I should move to the usa.

Another new guy here. Just got a new overflow valve and when trying to remove the old one, I could not get it past the intake manifold despite the notch. Is there a trick to this, am i missing something, do I just manhandle it, or do I have to remove the manifold?

You won't be able to remove the manifold. What you need to do is take a small hand held grinder (a Dremmel tool) and grind the head where it hits. Don't try to manhandle the valve since you could bend the return line then you have a heck of a time getting things back together.
