Ok. How bad is it

Just purchased this truck a couple of months ago;
It's a plain truck, no upgrades that i can tell.
2000, 3/4 5.9, auto.

It has several things that need to be corrected and will work them as fast as i can.

First problem is the exhaust.
It starts out as a 3", goes into a "free flow type" muffler (that is what i was told). It comes out as (2) 2 1/2 (dual's) and goes out to the rear bumper.
I was told that would be ok because it "should not back up" pressure.

I am unsure about this system. This should be like a cake walk for you expert's.

Is it ok OR should i replace it. I plan on pulling a 31" 5er with it.

Thanks in advance for your inputs. It is very important to me bacause i am as green as they come.

Thanks

GET rid of it And put a good 4" on it because it will breath better a 4" will flow more then 4 2"ers looks like a home made job

I just changed over to a 4 inch system because my 3 inch finally rotted out. No difference in mileage, performance, exhaust temps or anything else. A very good source, who made 800hp with a 12 valve on #2 diesel alone determined after dozens of dyno runs that a 4 inch isn't needed until you exceed 400HP. Do the basic pi R squared math and determine if your two 2 1/2 inch pipes have the same or more space than the stock 3 inch. BTW, looks like a pretty good job to me.

Change that pig out, you may not need huge diameter pipes, but those bends are not doing you any favors.

Looks like a typical Muffler shop glom job.

I agree with GAmes You don't need bigger pipes untill up start upping the H.P. If you want to spend the money put it somewhere else in the truck, gauges maybe torque converter or valve body kit. I think its a clean looking professional installation.

If your going to haul a 5er get rid of them they will turn your 5er black and all the exhaust will be blown through the trailer + you get HOT gases blowing strait on the 5er you need to loose it or at least get them turned to the sides!

I agree with what rebal says. At the very least turn them out. I wouldn't be overly concerned with backpressure, with no cat (I'm assuming) it should flow pretty good.

Use your money on a pyrometer first before wasting it on exhaust replacement.
It could very well be you don't need a bigger system but you should have a pyro anyway.

Thanks for the information. I was concerned about the system function, everything else looked good to me.
My next priority is gages.
THANKS.

Talking

I have 3" duals on mine; def get them out towards the sides. Get a pyro & it will tell you if you're overheating the turbo; you may not need to remove the duals anyways.
You may want to remove the muffler; I'm thinking once you start pulling it may overheat it & turn it colors-keep an eye on it.
