new cummins owner

Got myself a '98 12 valve 2500 ext. cab, 5 speed 4x4 with 3.54 gears two weeks ago. Love it! It is all stock. I got it because I will be in need of a tow rig and will also be traveling a lot over the next 6 mo. and needed something that could take the miles and gets better mileage. I want to do some mods as I can afford them, nothing too wild, do not want to do anything that will hurt the mileage.
Here is what I was thinking, please let me know if I am headed in the right direction:
Free flowing air filter of some type
4" exhaust
EPA approved torque plate
Larger tires when it is time to replace them

I also have a question, will the torque plate hurt mileage any while cruising at 70mph??

thanks for any input you guys may have,
pacmule

I got better milage after I put the plate in. But tht is only if I keep the boost under 10 lbs.

Am about to purchase a 98 regular cab 2wd with 335000km VIN 8th digit is a D. The seller was unaware of any specs for the truck other than he bought from an auction dealer at 290000km and put on 55000km himself, "I put diesel in it and away it goes" the truck does run great except for some wispy white smoke coming out of the oil dipstick. Just wondering if 7500 Cdn seem like a good price for lots of Kms.
From your experience what is so great about the 12V vs the new 24V (I think it has something to do about the injector pump??)
Any input appreciated and congrats on your purchase, looking forward to mine (I felt like a kid behind the wheel hehehe)

Thanks Serge

Congrats on your purchase. I think a #10 plate and a GSK will do good for you.

The mane thing about the 12v is that the injection pump is mechanical and is very reliable and easy to Bomb compared to the VP 44 and lift pump in the 24v.

***** 91,
i have noticed that the #10 plate is popular but I was thinking that it would be too much torque for the stock clutch. I know I could just take it easy but I don't know if I would have that much self control

If the self control is a question take the star wheel all the way back. It will slow it down a bit. I have a #5 plate and after the dyno read I was pushing 880 lbs of torque, grossing out at 10500 lbs with a stock clutch, chasing Fords through the Rockies actually pushing them up the mountains. It is like they get on the windows like the bugs. I had no clutch slip. But put a clutch in the budget.

thanks for the help guys. I think I will start with the air cleaner for now. this BHAF looks like a good way to get better flow at a bargain price.
Is there any drawbacks to using this setup?
